Click to play videoThiruvanthapuram/ Thrissur (Kerala): The CPI-M youth wing DYFI's satyagraha started on Monday morning with the flame brought from the land where the pre-independence Vaikkom satyagraha took place.
DYFI's primary demand is that all believers should be permitted entry into the Guruvayur temple.
“Through this satyagraha, DYFI upholds the flag of renaissance,” said the State President, DYFI, M B Rajesh.
The BJP women's wing too was in satyagraha mode, protesting against the Government and non-believers interfering with temple administration and rituals.
The satyagraha was noted for the presence of actress Sukumari and Menaka and even the rain wasn't enough to keep the believers at home.
“Non-believers should not interfere in temple matters. With such a slogan we have conducted satyagraha of women in Guruvayur. Vaikom sathyagraha and the first Guruvayur satyagraha was done by believers,” said BJP State President, P K Krishanadas.
Guruvayur temple has been in the thick of controversy after a purification ceremony, following the visit of Union minister Vayalar Ravi's son - because Ravi's wife is from a Christian family.
Kerala Devaswom Minister G Sudhakaran said in the aftermath that the Left government was ready to enact a law to allow non-Hindu believers entry into temples.
The Temple committee too had expressed regrets over the rituals, only for the Tantri or chief priest to stick to his guns. Now political parties are trying to derive mileage from the issue.
