CPM builds consensus on Singur land
Kolkata: Over the past one week, the CPI(M) was seen trying to build a consensus across the political spectrum on the Singur land acquisition controversy.
The exercise began with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee allaying apprehensions over the land acquisition process in a meeting of the Left Front.
He then turned to the Opposition parties. And though the CPI(M) managed to iron out differences with its allies, it could not convince the Opposition to bury the hatchet.
Yet, after an all-party meeting on Wednesday, West Bengal Commerce & Industries Minister Nirupam Sen announced that the government will go ahead with the transfer of 997 acres of land to Tata Motors in Singur within this month.
"Because Tata Motors wants to launch its one-lakh-rupee car in 2008 and there's no question of slowing down. We'll go ahead with the process of land acquisition and transfer the plot inside this month," Sen said.
Though the Trinamool Congress says it will not budge an inch, the government's resolve to transfer the property to Tata Motors within this month is an indication that the resistance is weakening.
And that's largely because of the fact that the government has obtained consent from land owners to acquire up to 610 acres.
In fact, more and more farmer are agreeing to the proposal, though under pressure. Opposition parties, too, seem to be giving up. On its part, the government did face resistance and would perhaps have to cope with little more.
