Kolkata: The West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi's token attempt at sharing the people's power-plight has met with scorn from the ruling Left.
CPM leaders have spelt out a to-do list for him to follow, in addition to his decision to switch off power at Rajbhawan.
After the first day of the two-hour power outage implemented at the Governor's residence, senior Left leaders laced their reaction to Gopal Krishna Gandhi's move with a strong dose of sarcasm.
They have listed out a five-point charter they feel would aide the Governor in his novel venture:
Keep Raj Bhawan open for the poor and homeless in the city, the Governor's small family should seek humbler residence like the CM, 75 per cent of the governors salary should become aid for the state government in development schemes, keeping in mind the price hike the Governor should try and skip a meal a day and he should use public transport for going to unofficial functions.
The Governor on his part has dismissed the charter as 'acidic criticism', intended to shift the focus away from the real issue of power crisis to a crisis of power. But at least the common man seems to be appreciating the Governor's effort.
With less than a week for the Panchayat polls the CPM seems in no mood to entertain the Governor's power play.
The ruling party is now questioning the very constitutional need for the Governor's chair in a democratic setup.
