New Delhi: The Opposition is gunning at the UPA for failing to prevent terror strikes, but it has serious questions to answer in BJP-ruled state Karnataka. The state remains communally tense.
There are reports of Bajrang Dal activists attacking a church in the outskirts of Mangalore.
The Sri Ram Sena has called a bandh on Tuesday in the city. Prohibitory orders are in place till Wednesday.
Karnataka Chief Minister, B S Yeddyurappa told CNN-IBN that he has discussed the situation with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He says that there will be a tough crackdown on organisations that call for a bandh.
Karnataka DGP R Srikumar claimed that action has been initiated against all those responsible for the clashes in Mangalore.
"Prohibitary orders will be listed in a phased manner depending on the situation. Things are slowly returning to normal and action has been taken against all communities which are responsible for the recent clashes. There is no political pressure on the police. If there are complaints of conversion, people should inform the police instead of taking the law into their hands," he said.
Meanwhile, teams from the National Commission for Women and National Minorities Commission are visiting Mangalore on Tuesday.
Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and Abraham Mathai from the National Minorities Commision have already reached Mangalore.
At present, the situation in the city is tense but under control.
Normal life in the port city was disrupted as vehicles remained off the roads while schools and colleges were closed.
Tight security arrangements have been made in the entire city which witnessed attacks on police personnel for 'failure to prevent attack on religious places.
Meanwhile, district police said over 150 people were rounded-up after the violent incidents. In a related incident, four people were injured when their vehicles were attacked by a mob at Kalladka and Attavar on the outskirts of the Mangalore City on Monday night. Four buses and a car were pelted with stones.
As a precautionary measure, the district administration declared a holiday for all educational institutions in Mangalore City and taluk while extending prohibitory orders under Sec 144 Cr Pc for two more days.
Home Minister V S Acharya, camping in the city since Monday, said the situation had been brought under control and no fresh untoward incidents were reported so far.
Police from Udupi were asked to be ready for deployment in the city in case of any emergency.
