Cricket World Cup returns to Asia

Dubai: Cricket's world governing body announced the locations for the next three World Cups on Sunday.

India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will co-host the 2011 tournament; Australia and New Zealand have the 2015 edition, and England 2019.

The 2007 World Cup was already set for the Caribbean.

The International Cricket Council was asked to vote on rival bids for 2011 at its meeting in Dubai, having scrapped its policy of rotating the World Cup between regions and clearing the four Asian nations to vie with Australia and New Zealand for the right to host the title.

After the Asian bid won, the ICC awarded the following World Cup to Australia-New Zealand, leaving England unopposed for the 2019 tournament.

The ICC also announced that the first Twenty20 World Championship would take place in South Africa in September 2007. The 2009 event will be held in England.

The only vote needed on Sunday was for the 2011 World Cup. Unofficial reports said the Asian candidates won it 10-3 but the ICC would not confirm figures.

"We are delighted to have been asked to host the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, it is a tremendous honour," Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Shaharyar Khan said.

I S Bindra, who represented the Board of Control for Cricket in India at the vote in Dubai, was associated with Asia's previous successful bids for the 1987 and 1996 tournaments.

"Both of those were great successes and we hope 2011 will represent a new landmark as a cricketing and sporting milestone," Bindra said. "In Asia you will see traffic stop, and massive television audiences and crowds for all the matches played."
