Napier will host the opening game of the five-match ODI series, during the course of which India's No. 1 rank will also be on the line. And considering this is the second consecutive overseas tour for the Men in Blue, the team should be better prepared than it looked in South Africa.

Commentary (India 1st Innings)

That's it from us here. Do join us for the second ODI on 22nd January in Hamilton at 1400 local time, 0630 IST. Until then, good bye and take care.

Man of the Match Corey Anderson says that it was nice to come in the end and belt it around after Ross Taylor and Williamson had set the platform. Adds that he started off well while bowling but then went for some runs in the Powerplay but overall, he was happy with his bowling.

Brendon McCullum says that they did well to put up a par score but also knew they had to play really well to beat India. Kohli played a world class innings but Mitchell came back and turned it around. Adds that he was very pleased with the batting, Williamson, Taylor and then Anderson played really well. Mitchell McClenaghan is in the team to attack and he was outstanding, Milne too bowled well and it's a shame he had to leave abruptly. All in all, it was a very good fielding performance too.

MS Dhoni says that overall it was a good decision to bat first. It had to be backed by good bowling. Adds that they didn't do well in first three or four overs, but then bounced back well. The bowlers did well to restrict the Kiwis on a very good track. They were in the game while batting but those three wickets in the 43rd over changed it around. One of me, Jadeja or Kohli should have stayed till the end. Overall, I am happy, yes a bit disappointed but when two good teams play there has to be a winner.

A fantastic victory for New Zealand. Their batsmen, especially the middle order powered them to a competitive total. Chasing the target, India stuttered at the start losing Rohit Sharma early but then Dhawan and Kohli steadied the ship. New Zealand hit back in the middle overs picking up the wickets of Dhawan, Rahane and Raina. Kohli and Dhoni got together and added 95 for the fifth wicket. Kohli was going great guns and India looked to be cruising towards the target. But McClenaghan turned it around for the Kiwis in the 43rd over removing Dhoni and Jadeja and then Kohli in the next over to put the hosts in a potentially match-winning position. Ashwin tried his best but couldn't push India past the finish line.
