Ban vs WI: Best takes five in 77-run win

Mirpur: Tino Best's maiden five-wicket haul bundled out Bangladesh for 167 in their second innings, thereby helping West Indies to a 77-run win in the first Test at Mirpur. Chasing a target of 245 to win on the final day, the hosts succumbed under pressure of chasing at home.

Best returned figures of 5 for 24 in the second innings, breaking the back of the Bangladesh middle order. Five batsmen went past the 20-run mark but failed to carry on; Mahmudullah top-scored with 29.

Earlier, debutant offspinner Sohag Gazi picked up the remaining four West Indies wickets within 10 overs of play, bundling out the opposition for 273. Starting the day at 244 for 6, West Indies could only add 29 runs to their overnight score, thus giving Bangladesh a realistic shot at a rare Test win. Instead, the hosts got off to a shaky start losing two wickets to reach lunch at 45 for 2.

Chasing a target of 245, Bangladesh failed to cope with Best\'s pace and were bundled out for 167.

After lunch, Best’s explosive spell put West Indies in command, as Bangladesh slumped to 129 for 7. The 31-year-old fast bowler picked up the wickets of Shahriar Nafees and Shakib Al Hasan in quick succession early in the session to peg back Bangladesh, and then dismissed captain Mushfiqur Rahim for 16 to break an important partnership. When he rattled the stumps of Mahmudullah, Best had complete his maiden five-wicket hauls in Tests.

The left arm-spinner Veerasammy Permaul got three wickets in the second innings as he removed first-innings centurion Naeem Islam (26) and the dangerous Nasir Hossain (21) just before tea and then scalped Gazi for 19.

West Indies opening batsman Kieran Powell’s centuries in each innings earned him the Man-of-the-Match award. For Bangladesh, Gazi impressed the most with match figures of 9 for 219 including 6 for 74 in the second innings.
