BCCI bans players caught in IPL 5 sting

New Delhi: The BCCI has banned TP Sudhindra and four others for their involvement in spot-fixing during the Indian Premier League season five. Sudhindra, Mohnish Mishra, Amit Yadav, Abhinav Bali and Shalabh Srivastava were caught in a sting operation by a news channel in May.

Sudhindra has been banned for life, while Mishra, Yadav and Bali have been given one-year ban each. Srivastava has got a five-year ban.

The BCCI's disciplinary committee, headed by its president N Srinivasan, took the decision in a meeting in Mumbai on Saturday.

The committee acted on a report submitted by Ravi Sawani on the corruption allegations against the five players. Sawani completed the probe and submitted his report to Srinivasan a few weeks back.

The committee held Sudhindra guilty of actually receiving a consideration to spot-fix in a domestic cricket match, and hence imposed exemplary penalty on him, said a BCCI press release. Srivastava was held guilty of agreeing to fix a match and negotiate terms for the same, even though no actual match-fixing or spot-fixing took place.

Meanwhile, Mishra, Yadav and Bali were charged with loose talk and unsubstantiated bragging, bringing the game into disrepute, and hence, have been held guilty of the lesser offence, the statement further informed.

The penalties will be effective from the date of the suspension of the players – 15 May 2012.
