Clinical Kolkata down listless Deccan

A clinical Kolkata Knight Riders beat Deccan Chargers by five wickets with six balls remaining in their IPL 5 match at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday.

There were few scares in the middle overs, but Manoj Tiwary and Debabrata Das ensured that no further damage was done and took Kolkata to 127 for 5. Coming out for the run-chase, Kolkata lost Brendon McCullum in the third over when Dale Steyn trapped the opener infront of the wickets for 10 runs. Gautam Gambhir and Manvinder Bisla looked steady at the middle, but Amit Mishra clean bowled Bisla (10).

When Jacques Kallis joined Gambhir, runs started to flow freely and Kolkata were making steady progress to the target when Gambhir (30) in the ninth over played a lazy shot in the air which carried to Kumar Sangakkara at mid-on. Next over, Yusuf Pathan was bowled by Ankit Sharma just after hitting him for a huge six of the previous ball.

Kallis (23) got out in the 16th over when Kolkata's score was 101 to a beautiful outswinger from Steyn that took the South African's edge to Parthiv Patel behind the wickets. The wicket of Kallis gave Deccan hope to bounce back with 20 required off 18 balls.

Earlier, after put in to bat Deccan Chargers' Shikhar Dhawan scored a patient half-century to take his team to 126 for 7 in a rain delayed start. Sangakkara and Shikhar Dhawan (50) gave Deccan a good start but could not capitalise as they lost wickets at regular intervals. For Kolkata Brett Lee in his four overs took a wicket by giving only 15 runs and L Balaji (2-22) and offspinner Sunil Narine (2-26) took two wickets each.

Sangakkara (12) and Dhawan took some time to settle down but started to play shots after settling down. Sangakkara and Dhawan had put on 37 together when Balaji castled the Sri Lankan to break the partnership. However, Parthiv Patel coming at number three contributed 23 off 19 balls but was run out while going for a non-existent second run.

Dhawan, did not get a boundary between his 30 to 50 and played straight into the hands of Debabrata Das off Rajat Bhatia just after reaching his half-century. Late surge by JP Duminy (16) at the end took Deccan to a competitive total.
