Mohali: Faisalabad Wolves succumbed to a big eight-wicket defeat against Otago Volts in their first match of the Champions League Twenty20 Qualifiers on Tuesday, giving strength to the belief that the team depends on heavily on their two stars Misbah-ul-Haq and Saeed Ajmal.

Misbah's decision to bat first on a greenish PCA Stadium pitch surprised a few, and though he showed how to bat with a breezy 46 off 34 balls, the rest of the batting line-up folded cheaply to end the innings at 138.

But Faisalabad batsman, Khurram Shahzad, who made 27 - second-highest behind Misbah, doesn't feel the team is over-dependent on their skipper to score runs, while defending Misbah's decision to bat first.

Talking to the official CLT20 website, Shahzad said: "It wasn't a bad decision at all. The wicket wasn't doing anything in particular. There was just a bit of extra bounce due to which we lost early wickets. After that we were forced to bat slowly and that cost us the momentum. Although we did make up with a few quick runs in the end, we finished 15-odd runs short.

He added that the team is not over-reliant on Misbah's batting. "I don't think we are over-dependent on him as a batting side," Shahzad said. "He has always taught us not to depend too much on any particular player and due to that we have won quite a few matches even without him. Hopefully, in the coming matches we will show that we have other players who are capable of winning us matches and you will see that we are a very good team."
