Cuttack: Deccan Chargers on Tuesday registered only their second victory in IPL 5 and team’s opener Shikhar Dhawan attributed the 13-run win over Pune Warriors India to the third-wicket stand between Kumar Sangakkara and Cameron White.
Sangakkara (82) and White (74) shared a 157-run stand, the best in this year’s IPL, to help Deccan post 186 for 4 and Dhawan described it as an incredible achievement. "It was one of the best partnerships of IPL 2012. They batted fabulously. They started off well, rotated the strike and then went for the big shots," Dhawan said after the match. "I was going well, but I would have liked to stay a little longer at the wicket. I watched Sangakkara today and wanted to score some big runs like him," he added.
Dhawan also praised their bowlers for the victory. "Our bowlers bowled really well. Credit goes to them that they bowled well under such pressure," Dhawan said. "There was pressure from ball one. But we were sticking to our basics and looking to execute our plans."
Sangakkara (82) and White (74) shared a 157-run stand, the best in this year’s IPL, to set up a 13-run win over Pune.
When asked how different is Sangakkara's style of captaincy from White's, Dhawan said: "They both are good captains, but both have their own unique style. White has his own field placements, while Sangakkara has his own. They both are instinctive. Like today, Sangakkara asked me to bowl one over for him. He was going by his instinct. White, on the other hand, always changes the field and puts pressure on the batsmen," he said.
Though they did well in batting and bowling, Dhawan accepted that Deccan were sloppy in their fielding. "We know we dropped catches, but we have been working really hard on the fielding," he said.
With just two wins in nine matches, it will take a miraculous performance from Deccan to make it to the playoffs but Dhawan is still hopeful. "Of course it is a hard task, but hope is always there. We will give it our best to win all the games and make our team proud," he said.
