New Delhi: Bishan Singh Bedi has created a flutter in the cricket corridors by saying that India left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha has a suspect action, The Telegraph reported last weekend.
Bedi was present at the Cricket Association of Bengal's (CAB) Annual Awards ceremony, where he made this observation about Ojha: "I'm not a great fan of Ojha...that's because of his suspect action. That's how bluntly I can put it."
But one of world's greatest left-arm spinners, Bedi was all praise for Ravichandran Ashwin - the other spinner in India's current ODI squad touring Sri Lanka. "He is a very intelligent spinner...But he needs to prove his worth in Test cricket," Bedi said.
Former India skipper Bishan Singh Bedi has pointed finger at Pragyan Ojha's action, calling it "suspect."
"Nowadays what is happening is that the spinners are bowling faster and the pacers are slowing down...I think that there is a huge dearth of spinners in the world," the former India captain and coach said.
Bedi feels the game is loaded in favour of the batsmen, which is forcing the spinners to try more variations than required. "I think the spinners around are trying too many variations nowadays...This is because the Test matches are generally played on pitches favouring the batsmen.
"Pitches are mostly covered these days...so it becomes flatter. The spinners don't get much help. I know that cricket is primarily a batsman's game, but it is the bowlers who win you matches. So you need to prepare wickets which help both the batsman and the bowler," he said.
Bedi concluded by saying that nothing but hard work can earn you success. "There is no short cut to success..You should work hard and learn the basics. You should stick to your basics to be successful."
