Ex-WI batsman Morton dies in car crash

Trinidad: Former West Indies batsman Runako Morton has been killed in a car accident in Trinidad. The vehicle in which Morton was traveling lost control and hit a pole, killing him on the spot, on the Solomon Hochoy Highway in Chase Village in central Trinidad.

Morton, who was 33, played 15 Test matches, 56 one-day internationals and seven Twenty20s for West Indies. He made his ODI debut in 2002 and his Test debut three years later. He last played for West Indies in February 2010, in a Twenty20 against Australia in Sydney.

He also represented Trinidad & Tobago, Leeward Islands and Nevis. In a first-class career spanning nearly 17 years, Morton scored 5980 runs at an average of 39.60.

Morton, who was 33, played 15 Tests, 56 ODIs and seven Twenty20s for West Indies.

He had earned a recall to the West Indies team in 2009 after a productive domestic season where he scored 1010 runs at 56.11 in the four-day competition.

Chris Gayle, who was the captain of West Indies in the last Twenty20 and ODI that Morton played, expressed his condolences on Twitter: "We lost a True Warrior W.I Cricketer Runako Morton-May is soul rest in peace! Our memories together Live On!-My Condolences to his Family".

Current West Indies player Carlos Brathwaite also tweeted: "RIP Runacko Morton. Gone but not forgotten".

Rayad Emritt, the T&T allrounder, tweeted, "R.I.P. Morton. You’ll always be remembered buddy. Gone but NEVER forgotten. We miss you bro..."
