Fit Zaheer Khan eyes domestic cricket for India return

Zaheer Khan, the veteran Indian pacer, has said his fitness has let him down in the past but he has worked hard on it lately and now looking to make a comeback to the Indian side via domestic cricket.

"Everybody wants to represent the country. If I am fit and can meet the demands, things should fall in place. My fitness has let me down and I have been working on it. My next big test would be the domestic season, the Ranji Trophy. I want to get back into the Indian team," Zaheer was quoted as saying by DNA.

After being dropped from the Test team in December last year, Zaheer played a couple of Ranji Trophy games for Mumbai before he suffered a calf injury, which forced him out for four months before he represented Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final stages of the IPL. His injury during the Australia series at home early this year meant India played youngsters who did well in 4-0 thrashing of the Aussies.

Zaheer has said his fitness has let him down in the past but he has worked hard on it lately and now looking to make a comeback.

Zaheer doesn't feel threatened with young upcoming players and in fact terms their progress as positive for Indian cricket. "Youngsters doing well is a good sign for Indian cricket. And if seniors do the same, then you become a champion side. There is no threat. Competition only helps you do your best," said Zaheer, who last played a limited-overs match for India back in October 2012.

Talking about his stint with renowned trainer Tim Exeter in France where he had gone for a fitness training along with Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer said: "It was a good conditioning. We worked on fitness. I think we went to the right guy. Tim knows what every sportsperson needs in this competitive world. This was the first phase of my conditioning. We will go to South Africa early next month. I plan to work on fielding and bowling there."
