Essex have announced the signing Harbhajan Singh for the second half of the English summer.
Chelmsford: Essex have confirmed the overseas signing of discarded India offspinner Harbhajan Singh for the remainder of the English summer. Subject to visa clearance, Harbhajan will arrive in Chelmsford in mid-July and should be available for the remaining eight matches of Essex’s County Championship campaign, the club has said.
"We are delighted to have signed one of the best spinners in world cricket over the last 10 years or so," Essex head coach Paul Grayson told the team's website.
"Harbhajan is a great character who is a match winner and I believe that his winning mentality will rub off on the rest of the playing squad here at Essex.
"I am really excited at the prospect of having him in the squad and this signing for the second half of the season shows that Essex mean business and will continue to fight in the LV County Championship and Clydesdale Bank 40 formats of the game."
If he gets his visa clearance, Harbhajan could debut for Essex against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham on July 11. This will be his third county cricket stint after two spells with Surrey in 2005 and 2007.
The 32-year-old is currently out of favor with the Indian selectors, and has not played for India since last summer.
