Perth: Hobart Hurricanes began their Big Bash League Twenty20 campaign with a convincing 31-run victory over Perth Scorchers at the WACA Ground here on Sunday.
Electing to bat, Hurricanes managed a moderate 140. The home side in their reply lost wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for a paltry 109 with one ball to spare.
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who opened the batting for the Hurricanes, made a scratchy 17 off 19 balls before looping an easy catch to mid-off. The batsmen who followed also found the going tough, with only three of them making it to 20 in the innings.

Hobart Hurricanes beat Perth Scorchers by 31 runs in the Big Bash at the WACA Ground on December 18, 2011.
Travis Birt was the top-scorer for the Hobart team with 40 off 30 balls, while Scorchers pacer Ben Edmondson starred with the ball, snaring four wickets.
