Indian spinners, R Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha, stifled New Zealand for runs and demolished their top-order. Ojha snared Brendon McCullum for 22 to instigate the collapse and Ashwin chalked up three wickets in quick succession to leave visitors reeling at 82 for 4. Ojha then removed Kane Williamson just before stumps to leave the visitors reeling at 106 for 5.

India scored 438 in their first innings.

India were bowled out for 438 before tea, after which the spinners gave India control by striking early.

India 438 all out (Pujara 159, Dhoni 73; Patel 4 for 100) lead New Zealand 106 for 5 (Williamson 32, James Franklin 31*; Ashwin 3 for 30, Ojha 2 for 35 ) by 332.
