11 a.m. (IST): Shikhar Dhawan (16*) and Murali Vijay (19*) have safely negotiated the 14-over period before stumps in Whangarei to take India to 41 for 0 in reply to NZ XI's 262 for 9 declared.

So it's been a good outing for the Indians, especially with the ball as all their bowler got among the wickets. Pandey was the most impressive with his three wickets. Ishant too chipped in with a couple of wickets, but was once again expensive - giving away 4.14 runs an over.

10 a.m. (IST): New Zealand XI declare at 262 for 9, which gives Indian batsmen an hour to negotiate, roughly 15 overs.

Ishwar Pandey was the most impressive Indian bowler with figures of 3 for 42. Ashwin took 2 for 45, Ishant 2 for 58, Zaheer 1 for 42 and Umesh 1 for 70.

8:15 a.m. (IST): The Indians bowled superbly in the post-lunch session taking 5 wickets for 97 runs in 25 overs as Ishwar Pandey pressed for a Test debut with a two-wicket burst. Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma also took a wicket apiece, while Ashwin added one more to his account.

Besides the two wickets, Pandey's figures of 10-5-24-2 reflect that he bowled with control and economically.

Opener O'Donnell has so far been the top-scorer with 80. He was dismissed by Ishant. Jono Hickey is batting at 43 while the rest of the Kiwi middle order failed.

5:30 a.m. (IST): It's lunch at Whangarei and a half-century by Robert O'Donnell (52*) has pushed NZ XI to 102 for 2 in 36 overs.

Ishwar Pandey, who is being tested here by Dhoni, bowled five overs for 11 runs, including three maidens. Zaheer Khan and R Ashwin did the bulk of the bowling and were two wicket-takers for India; the former's figures reading 9-4-17-1 and the latter's 10-1-28-1.

Ashwin got opener G Worker out lbw for 33 after an opening stand of 81 while Zaheer got rid of skipper A Devcich for 9.

2:30 am (IST): New Zealand XI have won the toss and they will be batting first at Whangarei.

Hammered 4-0 in the ODIs, the Indian team would look to make a fresh start in its so far disappointing tour of New Zealand against a NZ XI in a two-day practice game to build up for the two-match Test series.

The ODI series was a thorough disaster for the visitors, who lost their number one ranking in the course of the 4-0 thrashing.
