Injury puts Harmeet's Ranji in jeopardy

New Delhi: India's latest spin-bowling sensation, left-armer Harmeet Singh, has suffered a setback right at the start of the 2012-13 Ranji Trophy season in which he hopes to take the next big step in his career after guiding India U-19 squad to the World Cup win earlier this year.

The Mumbai youngster has an injured finger in his bowling hand and thus has not been considered for selection in Mumbai's season opener against Railways at home, beginning Friday.

"There's a finger injury in my bowling hand, so that's why they [Mumbai selectors] haven't considered me," Harmeet told Cricketnext. "But I will be fit for the next game.

The Under-19 left-arm spinner was overlooked for the Mumbai squad after injuring a finger on his bowling hand.

Joint Honorary Secreatary of the Mumbai Cricket Association, Nitin Dalal, confirmed Harmeet's injury when asked about his unavailability for the first match. "I suppose he has a finger injury in his left hand,” he said. When inquired if Harmeet was in with a chance to be selected for the next match considering he gets fit, Dalal said: The squad is picked for one match at a time. But even if he is all right, it is up to the selectors to select him or not.”

Harmeet had earned comparisons with spin great Bishen Singh Bedi after India's triumph at the U-19 World Cup, where he picked six wickets in four games giving away just 3.02 runs per over.
