Jaitley may become BCCI boss in 2014

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and president of Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) Arun Jaitley is in line to become the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2014, as the cricketing body is planning constitutional changes to enable the elevation of Jaitley.

CNN-IBN has accessed the BCCI draft of the proposed amendments, which could enable the Jaitley to contest from the East Zone in 2014.

Jaitley is currently the vice president of the board from the North Zone and as per current rules, he can contest only in 2017.

The letter to this effect from board secretary Sanjay Jagdale says, "To consider and approve with or without modification the proposed amendments to the Memorandum of Rules and Regulations of the Board as recommended by the working committee which are enclosed."

Sources close to the development have told CNN-IBN that the proposed amendment is aimed at easing the rules for election to the post of president while at the same time allowing a deserving candidate to contest from a zone that itself may not be able to field a suitable candidate.

Under current rules, BCCI presidents are elected by rotation with each zone getting an opportunity for the top post. And by rotation, it is East Zone's turn to put up a candidate in 2014. However, the proposed amendment allows any zone to nominate a candidate from another zone too.

As per the current norms, Jaitley can only contest in 2017, when the North Zone gets its chance. However, if the amendments go through, Jaitley can be in the job in 2014 itself. And if two-third members of the board’s general body approves of the change, as required under the constitution, it will pave the way for Jaitley to hold the BCCI's top job.

This could be one of the points that will be discussed in the special general meeting of the board on September 15.
