Sydney: Cricket Australia's National Selection Panel (NSP) on Thursday included Victorian spinner Jon Holland into the Australian squad for Friday's tri-series match against Sri Lanka as cover for Xavier Doherty who suffered back spasms during Thursday's training session at the SCG.
Holland will join the Australian squad in Sydney on Friday morning while Doherty will be assessed by medical staff prior to the match before a decision on his availability is made.
"While Xavier Doherty's injury is not deemed as being serious it is important we have capable cover in Sydney for tomorrow's match. Jon has been bowling well for Victoria across all formats in recent weeks and we feel should he be required he will perform with distinction," said Australian coach Mickey Arthur.
"For purposes of clarity, other spinners who are playing in Western Australia, either for WA or New South Wales were not considered nor was Nathan Lyon who is recovering from a quad strain gained in the Test series," he added.
