BCCI snub Kapil, Azhar

New Delhi: India's two former captains, Kapil Dev and Mohammad Azharuddin will not benefit from Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) one-time payment scheme for former cricketers. Kapil led India to their first ever World Cup glory in England in 1983 and Azharuddin has represent India in 99 Tests and is regarded as one of the most successful captain of his time.

A report in Tuesday's Indian Express quoted a senior BCCI official as saying that Kapil had been excluded because he had not accepted the amnesty offered by the BCCI following his involvement in now-defunct ICL. "Kapil didn't turn up when the BCCI offered amnesty. He has also not been receiving his pension as he was part of the ICL. We have not considered his name," a senior BCCI official was quoted as telling the newspaper.

Azharuddin, now a member of parliament, was banned for life in 2000 for match-fixing and hence his name is also omitted by the BCCI. The board will distribute cheques to former players during the ongoing playoffs matches in the IPL. Under the BCCI's scheme, cricketers who have played more than 100 Test matches will get Rs 1.5 crores while those who have played between 75 and 99 Tests will receive Rs 1 crore.

The BCCI hasn't released a full list of players due to receive the payments, only a list of some of them invited to the IPL playoffs where they'll be awarded their cheques; the others, the BCCI said in a release, would be sent their cheques. The BCCI's one-time payment scheme stands to benefit around 160 cricketers.
