Royal Challengers Bangalore innings:

20th over: 166 for 5 It's all over. McDonald hits the winning runs, driving Mahmood through the covers for a boundary. A crucial win for Bangalore. McDonald remains not out on eight, while Vettori contributes with two. It's Bangalore's third victory in six games. That's it from us. Our full match report will be up shortly.

19th over: 160 for 5 A nervy finish to an otherwise good chase by RCB. They lose the well-set de Villiers to Chawla, whose leg-spin gives away only three runs. Four runs are still needed in the last over. RCB are still the favourites.

Match 25th, Punjab vs RCB: As it happened

Gayle smashes 87 off 56, while de Villiers smacks 52 off 39 as RCB get the better of Punjab by five wickets.

18th over: 157 for 4 Gayle would have finished the match in this over if he was not caught splendidly by David Hussey in covers. He smacks Awana for two fours and a six over deep square-leg fence before Hussey dives full-length to his right to send the big Jamaican back to the pavilion.

17th over: 140 for 3 A single off the first ball, which is followed by a dot, a wide down the leg-side and two runs from an inside edge to fine-leg, another dot and a reverse sweep for four by de Villiers off the fifth.

16th over: Gayle is cutting loose now, treating Praveen Kumar as a spinner and smacking him for a four and a massive six over his head. Just 32 runs more are required off the last four overs. Punjab lost the plot in the middle overs, allowing Gayle and de Villiers to get their eye in.

15th over: A good over from Chawla, who gives away just three runs at this crucial stage.

14th over: 113 for 3 Another big over for RCB. Harmeet Singh has given away 15 runs in his last over. Gayle launches him into the crowd off a full toss and de Villiers pulls him away for another four to the fine-leg region. The two RCB batsmen are toying with the Punjab bowlers now, finding the boundaries easily. Punjab need a wicket badly.

13th over: 98 for 3 Brilliant batting from de Villiers, who lofts Mahmood over cover for a boundary, then sweeps him for another four over short fine-leg. The momentum is now with RCB.

12th over: 86 for 3 The first ball from Harmeet is driven through the covers for a couple by Gayle, another cracking four in the same region off a full toss, then four singles follow.

11th over: 76 for 3 Azhar Mahmood comes into the attack and bowls a variety of slower balls straight away. Meanwhile, Gayle and de Villiers completes their unbeaten 50-run partnership in just 34 balls. Mahmood's first over produces four runs.

10th over: 72 for 3 The last two overs have been good for RCB as they take 24 runs off them. Gayle and de Villiers are doing it sensibly, taking limited risks but keeping the scoreboard moving with well-stolen singles and doubles.

9th over: 60 for 3 After five runs off the first four balls, Gayle finally opens his shoulders, hits a towering six over the straight fence. Another single to end Chawla's over, which goes for 12 runs.

8th over: 48 for 3 Harmeet Singh gets the ball. A single by de Villiers off the first, then a couple of runs off the second, two more singles, and a two through deep square-leg is followed by another couple of runs through the gap between point and short third-man.

7th over: 39 for 3 A good, tight over by legspinner Chawla, who gives away only three runs in his first over.

6th over: 36 for 3 Another wicket for Awana as he surprises Tiwary with a well-disguised bouncer, which climbs on to him as he gets a top edge and is caught by keeper Saini. He is replaced by de Villiers, who runs three off his second ball. Gayle spanks back-to-back boundaries and a dot ball follows.

S Tiwary c Saini b Awana 4 (7)

5th over: A single away to mid-on off the first, another single to the leg-side, a dot and a single follow, a three to fine-leg and another single off the last as Praveen Kumar finishes his third over.

4th over: 18 for 2 Awana's second over produces only one run. After a single off the second by Saurabh Tiwary, Awana bowls four dot balls to Gayle. Good stuff by the Delhi lad.

3rd over: 17 for 2 Praveen starts his second over with a wide down the leg-side and a dot follows, Gayle punishes him for bowling a little wide as he smashes a boundary through the covers, another four to fine leg fence off fourth, and three dot balls to end the over.

2nd over: 8 for 2 Parvinder Awana strikes in his first over. The medium-pacer traps Agarwal right in front of the wickets. Kohli has thick edged an outside off delivery for a boundary, two dot balls follow and the wicket of Kohli off the sixth.

V Kohli c Marsh b Awana 4 (4)

M Agarwal lbw b Awana 1 (3)

1st over: 3 for no loss Praveen Kumar gets the first over and he is on the button from the very first delivery, swinging the ball in the air. Mayank Agarwal gets a single with an inside edge to the leg-side, three dot balls follow, a wide down the leg-side which costs only a single as Gayle also gets off the mark.

Kings XI Punjab innings:

20th over: 163 for 6 Mandeep is caught on the very first ball, Mahmood sends the second over the sight screen for a six, then a single follows, Chawla pulls Vinay past square-leg for a boundary and the two batsmen run two off the fifth. Another single is taken by Chawla off the last. Good finish by Punjab's batsmen. They were tottering at 105 for 5 at the end 15 overs but a good little cameo (33 off 14) by Mahmood gives them a challenging total.

19th over: 149 for 5 Almost every ball has fallen between fielders in this over from Zaheer Khan as Punjab's batsmen are scampering for singles and doubles. Another ten runs as the hosts’ score almost touches 150 mark.

18th over: 139 for 5 Mahmood is turning it on for Punjab. The former Pakistan allrounder races to 24 off 10. Vinay Kumar proves expensive once again in the end overs. His third over leaks 14 runs.

17th over: 125 for 5 Patel has proved to be the weak link in RCB's attack today. After three singles off the first four balls, he pitches one up and Mahmood sends it over mid-off for a boundary. Another ball in the same region and Mahmood clubs it over the deep square-leg fence for a maximum.

16th over: 112 for 5 Azhar Mahmood replaces skipper Hussey. After two singles off the first two, Mandeep cuts out Vettori past point and the batsmen scamper back for the second. Three more singles off the last three. Vettori finishes his spell with none for 24.

15th over: 105 for 5 Patel finishes an otherwise bad over with the big wicket of Hussey, who misses a pitched-up delivery, which canons into his middle stump. Apart from Hussey's wicket, eleven runs have been scored off his bowling.

D Hussey b Patel 41 (34)

14th over: 94 for 4 Good performance from McDonald as he finishes off his spell with the wicket of David Miller, who tries to loft the bowler over extra cover, misses and gives a straight forward catch to the fielder. McDonald takes 2 for 25 in his four overs.

D Miller c Khan b McDonald 8 (13)

13th over: 89 for 3: After giving away 14 runs in his first over, medium-pacer Harshal Patel comes into bowl again. A single off a leg bye off the first, then a dot ball, a four past the deep square-leg fielder off the fourth and a single and a dot off the fifth and sixth respectively.

12th over: 81 for 3 Vettori is bowling beautifully, not giving away any freebies to the Punjab batsmen. Just six singles off his third over. The hosts' batsmen need to start swinging now.

11th over: 75 for 3 Runs have come in singles in this over as McDonald finishes his third over.

10th over: 70 for 3 Six runs off Vettori's second over. A dot ball is followed by a four through the gap between short third man and point. Another two runs round off the tenth over.

9th over: 64 for 3 Good bowling from McDonald as he gets the wicket of good-looking Shaun Marsh, who misses a late cut to third man and the ball comes back off the seam to hit the stumps. David Miller replaces him as seven runs have been scored off this successful over by the Victorian allrounder.

S Marsh b McDonald 26 (17)

8th over: 57 for 2 Vettori comes into the attack and gives away only six runs in his first over. The RCB captain maintains a tight line.

7th over: 51 for 2 McDonald gets the ball. Four singles off the first five balls and a six by Marsh off a slower ball, which is neatly taken by a Punjab player sitting in the dug out.

6th over: 41 for 2 Three boundaries have been scored in Harshal Patel's first over. The first one is carved past point by Marsh, second through extra cover. And a straight four by David Hussey finishes the over.

5th over: 27 for 2 Zaheer bowls his third over. Valthaty finally gets off the mark with an uppish drive over the covers off the second ball, and he follows it up with a sparkling four through the same region. But the pressure gets the better of him as he miscues a lofted shot over mid-off and gets caught by de Villiers, who is not keeping today.

P Valthaty c de Villiers b Khan 6 (12)

4th over: 20 for 1 Two dot balls and a cracking cover drive off a half volley, a single and two dot balls as Vinay Kumar’s first over finishes.

3rd over: 15 for 1 The first ball is a dot, another inside edge to fine-leg and Saini and Valthaty scamper back for the second. A pull to deep square-leg gives another two, and then Saini tries to clear the cover fielder but plays the ball on to his stumps. Marsh gets off the mark to a leading edge to the off side on the fifth, while sixth is a dot ball.

N Saini b Khan 14 (12)

2nd over: 10 for no loss A flick off the pads gives Saini two, a four to the same region follows off the second, a well-stolen single and three dot balls end Vinay Kumar's first over.

1st over: 3 for no loss Nitin Saini gets off the mark with an inside edge to fine-leg off Zaheer Khan, three dot balls follow, then a single to the off side on the fifth and a swing and miss on the sixth to end the over.

7.30 p.m. Royal Challengers Bangalore's skipper Daniel Vettori wins the toss and decides to bowl first in their IPL 5 game against Kings XI Punjab at the PCA stadium in Mohali on Friday.

Punjab make three changes. Nitin Saini to don the wicketkeeper's gloves in the absence Adam Gilchrist, while former Pakistan player Azhar Mahmood and South African batsman David Miller also get a game. Bangalore include Australian allrounder Andrew McDonald in place of Tillakaratne Dilshan.

7.20 p.m. Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the IPL 5 match between Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore. It’s a big game for both the sides as they are lying at seventh and eighth respectively, just above Deccan Chargers, in the points table. And a win here will not only give two points but also a much-needed boost to their respective campaigns.

It’s a big challenge, especially for Punjab, after all the Preity Zinta controversy and playing without their regular skipper Adam Gilchrist. Azhar Mahood may finally find a place in the Punjab line-up. David Hussey will lead the side in the absence of an injured Gilchrist. Bangalore will once again bank heavily on Chris Gayle. The Jamaican’s eight sixes helped them chasing down a huge total against Pune Warriors India in the last game.

You can read our preview to have a sense of what all we can expect from the two sides.
