IPL 5, Match 54: as it happened

An unbeaten 82 by Chris Gayle and ably supported by Virat Kohli (36) guided Bangalore to a nine-wicket over Mumbai.

16th over: 121 for 1. From here on Bangalore are on course for a win. They just need 21 off 24 balls with wickets in hand.

15th over: 111 for 1. With Gayle batting one can't afford to relax for a second. Pollard pitches the last one up and Gayle lands it in the second tier.

14th over: 97 for 1. Harbhajan completes his spell with 18 for no wickets. Gayle has somehow failed to take the attack to Harbhajan, as the offspinner's miserly four overs come to an end.

13th over: 94 for 1. Now Gayle seems to have decided to go after the bowling. His countryman Pollard faces the brunt and gives away 15 runs, which included one six and a four.

12th over: 79 for 1. After a massive over from Ojha, the captain takes charge and puts a plug on the scoring. Harbhajan gives just three runs.

11th over: 76 for 1. After bowling a successful first over, Gayle decides to take on Ojha and plunders 22 runs from his over. Gayle goes ballistic and hits three successive sixes off some poor bowling from the bowler.

10th over: 54 for 1. A wicket can only slow down things and only that has happened here. Just four runs from this over.

9th over: 50 for 1. Pragyan Ojha comes in to bowl his first over and gets the wicket of Tillakaratne Dilshan. However, the dismissal was controversial as he is adjudged caught behind while the replays show that there is no edge to the wicketkeeper.

Tillakaratne Dilshan lbw b Ojha 19 (25)

8th over: 47 for 0. Into his first over Harbhajan Singh and starts off with a tidy one. Both the Bangalore openers are yet to open up, maybe waiting for the middle overs to launch.

7th over: Bangalore 39 for 0 Kieron Pollard comes into bowl. Just four off the over.

6th over: Bangalore 35 for 0 Gayle unleashes his fury on RP Singh - again. Pulls him for a flat six. Scary. And Dwayane Smith drops the fellow Caribbean off the next ball. The top-edge off Gayle's bat goes high in the air and Smith bungles it at third man. He was the hero in the last match. It's another story this time.

5th over: Bangalore 27 for 0 Malinga continues. His third over in a row. That means he will have just one after this. Clearly, Harbhajan is desperate to get the breakthrough. However, Malinga is bringing no relief as Gayle steers him past point to fetch a four.

4th over: Bangalore 22 for 0 Gayle breaks his shackles in this over. Hits RP Singh for two successive fours. Both muscled through the off-side. Dilshan gets in on the act and hits a scorcher past point. RP Singh grimaces. 14 off the over.

3rd over: Bangalore 8 for 0 Malinga continues and continue both batsmen's troubles against him. Just one runs off it.

2nd over: Bangalore 7 for 0 RP Singh comes into bowl. Tight over. Just three singles off it. Gayle survives a run-out off the last ball. A direct hit from short cover would have sent him back.

1st over: Bangalore 4 for 0 Malinga opens the bowling for Mumbai. Bowls a great over. The fifth ball takes Dilshan's bat's edge but it does not carry to Harbhajan Singh at first slip. It's a four. Gayle is yet to play a ball.

Mumbai Indians:

20th over: 141 for 6. Here Kohli makes a mistake of giving the last over to Vinay Kumar and Pollard hits two successive sixes. Karthik at the start and then a late surge by Pollard and Harbhajan helped Mumbai to a decent total.

19th over: 123 for 6. Zaheer gets one lower full-toss and Harbhajan sweeps it ease for a boundary in the square-leg. Another one comes off a top edge and gives away 10 runs.

18th over: 113 for 6. Muralitharan finishes an excellent spell and returns with figures of 2 for 24. The veteran offspinner gives concedes just eight runs.

17th over: 105 for 6. With two new batsmen at the crease, Kohli brings back his strike bowler Zaheer Khan into the attack and he doesn't disappoint. Only concedes four runs.

16th over: 101 for 6. Muralitharan is yet to forget the art of spinning the ball and takes two wickets in two successive balls.

Dinesh Karthik c Kohli b Muralitharan 44 (39)

15th over: 95 for 4. Karthik is having a good run this season and also in this match. Again targets Tamil Nadu team-mate and takes 10 runs from Mohammad's over.

14th over: 85 for 4. Harshal goes for runs in this over but in bargain gets the wicket of Rayudu. The Mumbai batsman fails to clear long-off and holes up to Muralitharan.

Ambati Rayudu c Muralitharan b Patel 22 (17)

13th over: 73 for 3. Finally a good over comes Mumbai's way. Karthik decides to lift the tempo and dances down the track to lift Mohammad for a six over deep midwicket.

12th over: 60 for 3. Just four runs comes from this Muralitharan over. The fours and sixes are hard to come by, but both the batsmen should keep their cool to atleast help their team post a decent total.

11th over: 56 for 3. Ambati Rayudu and Karthik hold key to Mumbai's innings. The pitch has eased out a bit, but the runs are still hard to come by.

10th over: 48 for 3. Muralitharan comes in to bowl and the magician is not a spent force yet and starts off on a good note with some spin and turn.

9th over: 42 for 3. Second ball off Harshal Patel goes for four through the covers. The next ball the bowler settles scores by getting the prized scalp of Tendulkar.

Sachin Tendulkar c & b Patel 24 (27)

8th over: 37 for 2. After much consultation, Virat Kohli drops the idea of bringing on Muttiah Muralitharan and throws the ball to Syed Mohammad and he concedes eight runs.

7th over: 29 for 2. Harshal Patel into his second over and pulls off a tidy one. Now, Tendulkar and Karthik need to take some risk to accelerate the scoring.

6th over: 25 for 2. Finally Tendulkar breaks the shackles and cuts loose, as he hits three successive boundaries off Vinay Kumar. All the three shots to the fence were proper cricketing shots.

5th over: 12 for 2. A decent over finally comes through Mumbai's way, as the home team takes seven runs from this Harshal Patel over.

4th over: 5 for 2. Mumbai are struggling at the moment and apparently this is lowest score after four overs in all IPL.

3rd over: 3 for 2. Another excellent over from Zaheer. Surely there is some purchase for the bowlers from the wicket and the Mumbai batsmen are finding it hard to score freely.

2nd over: 2 for 2. What a return for Vinay Kumar. The medium-fast bowler digs in a short one and Franklin pokes it to the third-man fielder for a easy catch. Fifth ball pitches on line and wraps Rohit Sharma on the pads.

Rohit Sharma lbw b Vinay Kumar 0 (3)

James Franklin c Khan b Vinay Kumar 1 (6)
