End political interference in SLC:Lorgat

Colombo: Haroon Lorgat, the former ICC Chief Executive, has recommended action to review "laws that create potential for government interference" in Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Lorgat was employed by SLC to recommend ways to induce more professionalism into the governing body.

SLC obtained Lorgat's services as a special advisor in its bid to revamp the administration with emphasis on financial management. His report was published here on Tuesday. Lorgat recommended that constructive engagement with the sports minister was necessary to amend the Sports Law so as to comply with international norms and the new regulations of the ICC.

Lorgat has termed unhealthy the provision in the local sports law which requires the minister to appoint national selection panels. He dismissed the provision that prohibits the announcement of a national team and a captain without the approval of the minister.

Lorgat recommends end to political interference in SLC

SLC obtained Lorgat's services as a special advisor in its bid to revamp the administration with emphasis on financial management.

Lorgat also recommended the need to develop suitable high performance and indoor facilities and to clear the prevailing tensions so that former national greats could serve as role models for emerging players. In his report, Lorgat said that even though SLC can boast of a reasonably successful national team, it has faced very challenging strategic, financial, administrative and operational issues.

Lorgat recommended long-term soft loans as means to overcome the SLC's present burdensome financial obligations.

"Proper and detailed long-term financial planning, eg. four-year budget cycles and strict fiscal management to ensure financial stability and growth," is a key recommendation.
