Lower order ensure 1st inn lead for HP

Jammu: Riding on its lower order's impressive performance, Himachal Pradesh took a vital 14-run first innings lead over hosts Jammu and Kashmir as wickets kept tumbling like nine pins on the second day of a Ranji Trophy Group C match here on Sunday.

Resuming at 26 for no loss, Himachal Pradesh were bowled out for 189 runs in their first innings in reply to J&K's 175 with medium pacer Ram Dayal picking up six wickets for 50 runs. Wicket-keeper Aatish Bhalik top-scored for Himachal Pradesh with a 135-ball 40. J&K were no better in their second essay as, at stumps, the hosts lost three wickets with the scoreboard reading just 16.

For Himachal Pradesh, pacer Rishu Dhawan picked up two wickets for six runs, while Vikramjeet Malik accounted for the other J&K batsman. An outright result is very much on the cards as J&K are just two runs ahead of Himachal Pradesh with two full days play still remaining in the match.

Assam vs Andhra Pradesh

In Guwahati, Assam were in a comfortable position at the end of second day's play against Andhra Pradesh. At stumps, the hosts were 166 for two, just 83 runs behind Andhra's first-innings total of 249 all out with eight wickets in hand.

Sibsankar Roy top-scored for Assam with a knock of 72 while Pallavkumar Das was unbeaten on 49 when the stumps were drawn at the Nehru Stadium. Giving Das company was Amit Sinha on 20.

For the visitors, Amol Muzumdar struck an unbeaten 108 off 231 balls. The veteran batsman from Mumbai hit 12 fours and a six during his 403-minute stay at the crease.

Muzumdar was batting on 82 when Andhra resumed their innings from overnight 214 for eight. Arup Das was the most successful Assam bowler, finishing with figures of four for 61.

Brief scores: Andhra 1st innings: 249 all out in 89.5 overs (Amol Muzumdar not out 108, Bodapati Sumanth 57; Atup Das 4 for 61); Assam 1st innings: 166 for two in 69 overs (Sibsankar Roy 72).

Kerala vs Jharkhand:

In Malappuram, opener VA Jagadeesh and Robert Fernandez struck centuries and added 230 runs for the second wicket as Kerala took a huge 205-run first innings lead against Jharkhand in their Group C Ranji trophy match on the second day, here on Sunday.

At close, Jharkhand were reeling at 37 for 2 in 14 overs in their second essay. Earlier, resuming at overnight score of 165 for 1, Jagadeesh (138) and Robert Fernandez (111) batted well to take their side to a postition of strength.

But once the pair was dislodged, rest of the batsmen fumbled and the hosts were all out for 325 runs. Jharkhand's Shahabaz Nadeem was the chief wicket-taker (4 for 90) while Sameer Quadri captured 3 for 77.

The visitors did not fair well in their second innings too losing early wickets and have a tough task on hand.

Brief scores: Jharkhand: 120 and 37 for 2; Kerala 1st innings: 325 all out (Jagadeesh 138, Fernandez 111; S Nadeem 4 for 90, S Quadri 3 for 77, Rao 2 for 39).
