Sammy confident West Indies can bounce back despite big loss

Perth: Darren Sammy's hopes of a rare series win have not been dimmed by a nine-wicket hammering in the first ODI here on Friday, but the West Indies captain knows it will be tough for his team to rally. The visitors were bowled out for just 70 after Sammy opted to bat, which was their third-lowest total in ODIs, before Glenn Maxwell rushed Australia home in 9.2 overs.

Speaking after the embarrassing defeat, Sammy said he was confident West Indies could recover with four matches still to be played. "They came hard at us and we have to come back even harder," said Sammy after the defeat at the WACA. "We have to bounce back and it is just the first game of a five-match series. It is just a one-off game. We will come back on Sunday and look to execute better.

"We know we have the ability and that's what I will tell the boys. Yes, it's going to be hard to wipe what happened off the memory. But we've had great games against them and we'll think about the positives. We need to dust ourselves off and believe we can be successful against them."

West Indies were hammered in the first ODI and the skipper knows it will not be easy to rally from here.

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc was awarded the Man-of-the-Match award for his career-best 5 for 20 which reduced West Indies to 39 for 7."We spoke about getting enough balls in the right areas on that wicket and I think we did that very well today," he said at the post-match presentation. "To bowl them out for 70 was a great result."

The second match is also at Perth on Sunday.
