During the 38th over of Sri Lanka's innings, three Indian fielders contrived to add four runs to the total. Dinesh Chandimal, batting on 31, pushed a delivery from R Ashwin towards the midwicket region and from the non-striker's end Lahiru Thirimanne sprinted out of the blocks. Chandimal too took a few paces but then saw Suresh Raina swoop in on the ball and sent his partner back.
Thirimanne was gone for all money but Raina's fling at the non-striker's end was off the mark. What was worse, the two fielders backing up - one of which was the captain Virender Sehwag at cover - failed to stop the ball and the result was a life for Thirimanne – who went on to score a brisk half-century – and four runs to Chandimal. Until then Chandimal had failed to score a boundary; with India's generosity he managed one.
