Canberra: West Indies were beaten by 23 runs by a Prime Minister's XI captained by Ricky Ponting in a 50-over match which opened their cricket tour to Australia on Tuesday.
Half centuries to Keiran Powell, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Andre Russell weren't enough to prevent the tourists coming up short in a massive run chase after the home side made 333 for 6 after winning the toss and batting.
Alex Doolan made 87, Usman Khawaja 69 and Jono Dean 51 for the Prime Minister's XI which scored at a rapid rate on a placid pitch at Manuka Oval.

Chasing 334 to win, the tourists fell short by 23 runs against the Australians led by Ricky Ponting.
Powell made 92 before retiring hurt, Sarwan 63 and Russell 54 from 24 balls before West Indies were all out to the last ball of the 49th over.
West Indies meet Australia in the first of five one-day internationals at Perth on Friday.
