Mumbai: Mumbai will not have the services of veteran India pacer Zaheer Khan for the Ranji Trophy final against Saurashtra at the Wankhede Stadium, the DNA reported on Tuesday. Zaheer sustained a calf injury during the Group A match against Gujarat in December.
"Zaheer is not playing the final. He is still undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Association [NCA]. He said he will start running from tomorrow [Tuesday]," Mumbai Cricket Association joint secretary Nitin Dalal told DNA.
Zaheer, who has played three Ranji Trophy matches this season, taking nine wickets, will not be part of the Mumbai squad to be named on Wednesday. The daily also reported that Mumbai and Saurashtra have requested the Indian team to release their players Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara respectively for the final. "We have sent a letter today [Monday] to the Indian team management asking for Rohit to be released only if he is not going to figure in the playing XI," Dalal said.
The India fast bowler is recovering from a calf injury he picked up during a Group A match against Gujarat last month.
However, a BCCI official told PTI on Monday that Pujara, Rohit and Ravindra Jadeja, who also plays for Saurashtra, will not be released. "Neither among the trio of Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja and Rohit Sharma will be released for the Ranji Trophy final. They will be with the Indian team for the fourth and fifth One-dayers at Mohali and Dharamsala, respectively," the official said.
The final is scheduled to be played from January 26 to 30 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
