Niali (Orissa): Arat Sethi has a dark past. He was a hardened criminal once upon a time. But today, he wants to make up for all the wrong deeds he had done.

Sethi is devoted to making his village Jahangirpur beautiful. And with a lot of effort, he has converted the village cremation ground into a beautiful garden.

"In the past, I had done a lot of damage to the society. If I do something constructive by planting trees, I get a lot of satisfaction," says Sethi.

After Sethi was released from jail, he got married and started life afresh. He and his wife Suna are very happy now.

"Earlier, people in our village used to hate us but after he changed, the same people are giving us respect for his good work. We feel so happy," says Suna.

Sethi is encouraging others to plant more trees. Villagers love him for his dedication, so much so that they have even given him an award.

"Even though he is handicapped and has a criminal record, he is doing so much for the environment. He deserved to be awarded for his good work," says Local Committee President, Surya Das.

With sheer hard work and a strong desire to do something good, Sethi has virtually converted the village graveyard to a beautiful garden. This garden symbolises the dramatic change a criminal's life has undergone.
