Criminals get free run in riot-hit Orissa

Bhubaneshwar: Orissa has been witnessing anti-Christian violence for the past two months but now for the first time violence against non-Christians has been reported.

Barely a month after a nun was raped by anti-Christian rioters, a 20-year-old girl was raped by four men on September 21 in Bopanmendi village. But later was it found that she is a Hindu and that only her grandparents had converted to Christianity.

The victim filed an FIR at the Tikabali police station and one of the accused has been arrested.

"This is not the only case of girls being raped. There are several such cases, which do not get reported because the police in Kandhamal is not taking up these cases. The High Court of the state has rightly ordered that the victims can file FIR in any police station across the state," Raphael Chennath, Archbishop, Orissa, said.

The Kandhamal SP Praveen Kumar confirmed that anti socials not only commit rapes but also kill people for political rivalry under the garb of religious fanaticism.

The SP said two people were killed at Tumdibandh in Kandhamal on Thursday night due to political rivalry. While lawlessness is prevailing in Kandhamal, the Archbishop of Orissa has blamed the political gameplan.

"The chief minister is not acting tough because he does not want to displease his BJP alliance in the govt. BJP and BJD depend on each other to rule in Orissa," Chennath said.

The rape incident at Tikabali clearly shows that criminals do not have any religion.

Many criminals in Kandhamal are simply taking advantage of the volatile situation in the district and are committing heinous crimes in the name of religion.
