Bangalore: The state anti-corruption wing on Wednesday raided an IPS officer’s residence to seize accumulated assets worth crores.

Hemanth Nimbalkar has been SP of the sensitive border district of Belgaum before being posted to the state anti-terror cell, but no one realised that during his stint, Nimbalkar bought at least five properties worth crores.

Preliminary valuation estimates that he owns property worth about a crore, officials admit that's a very moderate estimate based on documents seized so far. In fact, final valuation could take a few days because some are still being discovered based on tip-offs.

“We have information that a lot of benami properties are there. We're enquiring into it and trying to find true value of all properties. We've had people calling us up and saying this gentleman has assets worth even Rs 250 crore,” says Lokayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde.

Justice Hegde says he'll soon be roping in income tax officials to carry out the investigations.

Nimbalkar owns houses, apartments and farm land in Belgaum, Kolhapur and Mumbai. Many of these in prime locations.

“He has political links, he is connected with powerful political personalities in Maharashtra,” says Hegde.

Just a month back, another IPS officer, M C Narayana Gowda, a DIG in the forest cell had come under the Lokayukta's scanner for having assets of Rs 1.4 crore.

But prosecuting these crorepatis in khaki will take a few years.
