New Delhi: The top officer of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Srinagar was shifted out on Thursday after allegations of excesses against the police force.

Hundreds of people came to the streets in Srinagar late Wednesday night after rumours spread that CRPF personnel had barged into homes in the old part of the city and assaulted people. A man was killed when the police fired on agitators in Srinagar on Thursday, further fuelling anger against the security forces.

The Centre shifted CRPF’s Inspector General Sunil Kumar Jain out of Srinagar as a damage control exercise. Separatist leaders in Kashmir had been demanding Jain’s transfer for some time now. The authorities say the police forces will have to conduct themselves well.

"Every body who is in the field will be scrutinised for his act," said CRPF spokesperson Prabhakar Kumar Tripathi.

"The standard instruction to our security forces, in the normal course, is to use minimum force. They are asked to use prudence and patience; they are not trained to go around and shooting and killing. But occasions do arise when their initial planning isn't adequate or at the last moment the situation goes out of hand," said state Governor N N Vohra.

Paramilitary forces and the Jammu and Kasmir police have been accused of using excessive force against protesters and more senior police officers may be shifted out of the state in the next few days. Reports say the Centre is considering replacing the Inspectors General of Police in Jammu and Kashmir. The Centre though knows that these concessions are not going to be enough to bring peace to Jammu and Kashmir.
