Srinagar: The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Jammu and Kashmir is looking at new ways of controlling stone pelting incidents, that have become the standard way of protesting. They are calling it operation WHAM.
A different body gear, non-lethal weapons and lot of ambulances to attend to the injured, are aspects of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF's new way to control an angry mob.
"We must be very hard with training during peaceful times and be very peaceful during the hard times," said CRPF Inspector General BN Ramesh.
While the police have spared more than 5000 men for the protests alone, the CRPF has started a vigorous re-orientation training to combat stone-pelters without actually delivering or taking injuries. All this became a top priority after the Prime Minister and the Home Minister suggested non-lethal ways to tackle protestors.
Security forces are working on a twin strategy - rounding off the hardcore elements and activating civic action programmes.
"The new strategy is called WHAM - winning of hearts and minds of the people. During peace, times we identify most vulnerable sections of people who are likely to become victims of militant propaganda. We are trying to reach out to them," said Ramesh.
Security personnel will also be equipped with non-lethal teaser guns, which will immobilise a protester with a small shot of electrical current, but that is for emergencies only, say the CRPF.
