Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force on Sunday claimed to have solved the January 1 Fidayeen attack on the Rampur CRPF camp, in which eight people, seven of whom were CRPF jawans, were killed.

The UP STF on Sunday claimed a breakthrough with the arrest of six Lashkar-e-Taiba militants.

Three militants were arrested from Lucknow on Sunday morning while the rest were nabbed from Rampur on Saturday night.

Two of these arrested militants are Pakistan nationals.

Police say besides the attack on the CRPF camp at Rampur, one of the militants, Sabauddin, was also involved in Dec 2005 blasts in IISC, Bangalore, in which one IIT-Delhi professor was killed.

“These militants were responsible for the Fidayeen attack on the Indian Institute of Science in 2005, where a scientist had been killed,” said DGP (UP) Vikram Singh.

The police have recovered two AK-47 assault rifles, bullets, RDX and railway tickets from them. The men were planning to leave for Mumbai when they were nabbed.

UP police say the six confessed to a plot to target the BSE.

“They were planning to target Mumbai’s Churchgate area. An attack in BSE was also part of their action plan,” Singh told reporters.

A blame game has now started between Mayawati and the Centre over the attack on the CRPF camp in Rampur. While the Centre had claimed that UP was provided specific inputs regarding the attack, Mayawati’s government was quick to deny it.

The arrest of six militants has come as a big relief for the UP police who were under tremendous pressure to solve this important case.
