Guwahati: Police in Assam's Lakhimpur district have arrested a CRPF trooper for allegedly raping a physically challenged woman, police said on Friday.
Lakhimpur Superintendent of Police Prashanta Bhuyan said the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) trooper was arrested late on Thursday.
The incident took place at Chauldhowa village, about 40 km from Lakhimpur town.
"According to locals, about four CRPF personnel forcibly took the physically challenged woman, who was passing by the CRPF camp on NH 52, to the nearby jungle," police said.
Some locals raised an alarm. While they managed to catch Mohan Singh, the others fled.
"We are looking at the allegation of involvement of the other three troopers," Bhuyan said, adding the arrested trooper was presented in court Friday, which sent him to judicial custody.
On Thursday, police arrested a Congress leader in Chirang district of Assam's Bodoland Territorial Areas Districts (BTAD) for allegedly attempting to rape a married woman.
Several civil society groups Friday blocked National Highway 52 in Lakhimpur, demanding action against the CRPF personnel. The organisations have also demanded the immediate arrest of the other three CRPF personnel.
