Bangalore: To put an end to the vicious circle of unsolved criminal cases and a police force that's blamed for the lack of success in cracking them, the Karnataka Police has launched Crime Stoppers.

The primary aim of the foundation is to involve citizens in the process of investigating criminal cases.

Chairman of the Karnataka chapter of Crime Stoppers, Dr A Ravindra, said, “The aim is to bridge the gap between police and people. Primarily, say the objective is to provide the information to the police, which they may otherwise not get. And the main point is that there will be anonymity; they will not have to disclose their identity."

Meanwhile, DGP of Bangalore Srikumar said, “Public participation is very important in crime investigation process. Police cannot function alone, the people act as witness and report evidence from the scene of crime.”

The program, which began in the US in 1976, centres across 20 countries. Its first centre in India was inaugurated in Hyderabad last year.

In the last one year that it has been operating in India, Crime Stoppers claims to have solved several cases through public participation.

Founder Chairman of Crime Stoppers Foundation, India, Dr KPC Gandhi said, “We receive more than thousand inputs on an average per day. And, the number of cases we solved are more than 50 and the number of crimes we have prevented are about 20."

In establishing Crime Stoppers, the Karnataka Police have taken the first step towards community policing by seeking public and media participation in a crusade against crime.
