Cuddalore residents relive Cyclone Thane horror

Cuddalore: Cyclone Thane came and went, and claimed 42 lives alongwith. Rescue operations are on in Puducherry and other areas that bore the brunt of the storm. However, Cuddalore, the worst-hit of all, still remains without milk and electricity, two days after the storm.

CNN-IBN visited Thottampattu, a village of 400 families, almost 6 km away from the coast in interior Cuddalore. Over 50 homes in the village have been wiped out. Viji's family is one of them. The villagers here may have lost their belongings but are thankful that they are still alive.

Says Viji, "My kids have been crying for milk since day before yesterday. I never imagined Cuddalore will see such a day. But at least we're alive, so it's ok."

Muthulakshmi, another resident, says, "We only want houses to live in. We expect nothing else from the government except a shelter for us."

The biggest challenge for the administration now is to fix the damage caused by the cyclone and restore normalcy.

When contacted, V Amudhavalli, Collector, Cuddalore, said, "Our first priority is to restore electricity. We have a lot of work to do. But first, we are trying to supply essentials. But it'll take time to restore complete normalcy."

For several families in Cuddalore, the New Year is starting on a sad note. The area is currently basking in the calm after the storm. After two days of incessant rains and massive winds, the sea is quiet and the sun is out.

However, just like Puducherry, Thane has left Cuddalore too bruised and battered to be expected to return back to normalcy any time soon.
