New Delhi: It's a ministry that has always contributed hugely to the Government's foreign exchange reserves. And it’s also been in news for controversies like Ram Sethu and the auction of Gandhian legacy.

Yet the lack of glamour in the Culture Ministry has left it without a minister. With the Prime Minister giving away charge of the Tourism Ministry, so far clubbed with culture, artists in the country are feeling let down and disheartened.

“India is known for culture and to be left without a minister is worrying,” says danseuse Kaushalya Reddy.

Perhaps why the community is now thinking of petitioning the Prime Minister over the issue. Says dance exponent Raja Reddy, “We shall tell honourable PM to take care of the culture portfolio”.

The concern is not unfounded. Culture has always been considered a less glamorous portfolio by ministers. This, despite over 45 autonomous bodies like the ASI and National Museum under its jurisdiction. Monuments under the department have also contributed hugely to the Government exchequer.

“I think the lowest level of indifference, of apathy to which we have brought culture – I don’t understand the reason for it,” says dancer Sonal Mansingh.
