Srinagar: Security has been tightened and curfew imposed in several areas of Kashmir Valley including Srinagar, Baramulla and Anantnag following the hanging of Parliament attacker Afzal Guru in Delhi's Tihar Jail on Saturday morning. Cable TV services have also been shut down in the Kashmir Valley.
Security has also been tightened in Delhi, Mumbai and other important cities of the country as well even as Home Secretary RK Singh said that he did not apprehend any law and order problem in either the Kashmir Valley or other parts of the country after Guru's hanging.
On January 21, 2013 the Union Home Ministry had sent Guru's mercy petition to President Pranab Mukherjee, who rejected it on February 3, 2013. Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde signed on his execution order a day later on February 4.
The 43-year-old Guru was sentenced to death in 2002 by a special court for his role in the 2001 Parliament attack case which was later upheld by the Supreme Court in 2004.
