Kolkata: The first curfew in Kolkata in 15 years was lifted early on Thursday morning.
Police have requested controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen to move out to some other state. But Taslima is said to have turned down the request. Reports say she was offered to be shifted to Rajasthan.
On Wednesday evening, the Army staged a flag march in five localities of central Kolkata.
Kolkata Police and rapid action force patrolled in the heart of the city before curfew was clamped after protests over Nandigram and visa extension to Taslima turned violent.
Parts of central Kolkata were paralysed after protesters went on the rampage. Police say the situation is now under control.
“The areas have been divided into four zones, each zone under one DCP, adequate deployment on the ground. We'll take each day as it comes. Tomorrow being a Friday, more force will be required,” said Jt Comm of Police, Kolkata, P K Chattopadhyay.
