Mumbai: Work in Bollywood has come to a stand still after the call for a non-cooperation movement by technicians and workers of the industry. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) have gone on an indefinite strike from Wednesday onwards with a demand for better wages on time.
"This is not a strike but a non-cooperation. It was decided by the producers and the association as to who is entitiled to what pay. You are not paying a person for three months how will that person survive," demands general secretary, FWICE, Dinesh Chaturvedi.
The association sent a notice on August 29 to the Producers Guild demanding action on their unpaid dues. But when their pleas fell to deaf ears they decided to go on a strike.
This call for non-cooperation on behalf of over a lakh cine-workers has had an adverse impact on around 60 films and television shoots which were cancelled on Wednesday - amounting to a loss of almost Rs100crores.
"Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Mallika Sherawat are all with us and not shooting on Wednesday," siad Chaturvedi.
And it's not just Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan who are rooting for the cine workers.
"If it is a reasonable demand they are making then they are justified," says actress Shefali Shah.
"People will get to the bottom of it as senior members of the industry are working on this issue," says actor Jackie Shroff.
"It is a huge loss and we can't afford it unfortunately," says actor Sunil Shetty.
With corporisation and expanding markets - money is surely pouring into Bollywood like never before. And though actors and directors are commanding fees previously unheard of, the trickling down effect is evidently not taking place.
Talks are on between the federation and the producers to solve the issue before work resumes in Bollywood.
