Thiruvananthapuram: The Plachimada agitation against Coca Cola has all but died down, but now its arch rival Pepsico which is under the scanner. A Kerala Assembly panel has ordered the cola giant to cut down water usage by 60 per cent at its bottling plant in Puducheri in Palakkad.
Minister for water resources N K Premachandran said, “All industrial units using ground water need to make sure that they are not over exploiting the resources. In this regard we have decided to restrict Pepsi's use of ground water to 2.34 lakh litres per day against their current use of 6 to 7 lakh litres. We will put strict measures to make sure of this.”
The order comes even as a high level panel is finalising its report on the environmental damage caused by the Coca Cola plan, just kilometers away.
The Coke plant had shut down in 2002 following a high court directive, after the Left-led agitation against it reached the zenith.
The government though says will not allow the Pepsi plant to close down, as it employs over 3500 people.
