New Delhi: On Friday CNN-IBN broke the story of involvement of Commonwealth Games Organising Committee OC CEO Jarnail Singh in giving a go ahead to the Timing, Scoring and Result (TSR) deal.
And now it is learnt that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is also planning to summon Jarnail Singh for investigations in TSR deal.
They are now wondering why Singh, despite being the CEO, did not raise the red flag, if he knew what was going on.
At the moment though, the focus is on filing the chargesheet in the case. Already Suresh Kalmadi, Lalit Bhanot and VK Verma have been arrested in this case.
CNN-IBN also accessed a video which has been used by the CBI as a crucial evidence in its case against Kalmadi and others. This video recorded on October 12, 2009 shows VK Verma making it clear to whom the TSR deal will be awarded.
Verma said, "The TSR deal will be awarded to Swiss timing."
But how could the CBI miss the presence of Mike Fennel, chairman of Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) at the same meeting.
Why didn't Fennel object to Verma's comment if it was out of line. Far from criticising the choice, Fennel seemed to perfectly satisfied with the choice of the company.
He said, "Processes followed by the OC seems to have fully satsified the government procedures and advised that swiss timing was regarded as one of the best TSR providers. OC was also very late and any further delay would have jeopardised the games."
The revelation throws up several questions - why did VK Verma make this claim openly if indeed if he was indulging in an act of cheating? Will the CBI also question other bureaucrats like Sindhushree Khullar the sports secy who were involved at every stage of decision making in the TSR deal?
How did Kalmadi and others manage to hoodwink so many government officers together in one deal?
Politically too CNN-IBN's expose has had an impact. A special press conference organised by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya saw release of documents showing the PM was being kept in the loop by sports ministers on the mess that the CWG had become. A charge that's been rejected by the UPA.
