New Delhi: In the latest development with regard to the investigations into the Commonwealth Games scam, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has ordered a preliminary enquiry against Spaceage, a firm that supplied bulbs for the Games at three times the original cost.

The firm was declared qualified after making a plea before Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

Spaceage then went on to supply low cost imported luminaries of Saudi make, costing Rs 5,040 and charging Rs 25,704 for the same, earning super profits of Rs 2.68 crore.

The firm was also violating the norm of keeping a manufacturer as the lead partner of the consortium bidding for a project for CWG.

This street lighting scam during CWG was exposed on CNN-IBN in August. The findings of the CAG report on CWG scam were revealed by CNN-IBN even before it was tabled in Parliament.

Now the CBI has filed a Preliminary enquiry to examine the entire process of awarding of street lightning contracts by Delhi government and other agencies.

Exclusively accessed by CNN IBN, the CBI preliminary enquiry mandate states it may look at closely the process of reconsideration of M/S Spaceage Switchgear Ltd after a representation was made by it to the Chief Minister who endorsed it to the Engineer in Chief Shri Subramanyam.

The CAG report had concluded that Spaceage switchgear was given the contract to supply imported luminaries after recommendation of Delhi CM. It was also suggested that this was a company that was initially rejected from the tendering process but brought back allegedly because of the CM.

Dikshit had defended herself by saying that Spaceage had approached the court before going to her. The defence will now come under CBI scrutiny.

The agency is also investigating senior PWD officials who had independently gone in for purchase of luminaries from different companies. The luminaries bought at a price of Rs 27000 per piece when it was available for Rs 10-15 thousand.

Therefore, after heat from Shunglu Panel and CAG, the Delhi government will have to brace itself up for some tough times ahead from the CBI.
