New Delhi: After 12 days of intense competition, the Commonwealth Games Village has become the hub of all activity now as athletes pack up to leave for their respective countries amid emotional farewells by the volunteers.

The Games Village, which had become deserted during the event as athletes were busy for their competitions at various venues, is once again buzzing with activity but only to be closed down completely in the next couple of days.

Most of the Indian athletes have already checked out to either take a break after the Games or resume training for next month's Asian Games in China.

The international athletes, on the other hand, are doing some last-minute shopping and sight-seeing before packing their bags to board flights to their respective nations.

The Village, which has 36 residential towers, came in for heavy criticism in the run-up to the controversy-marred Games but most of the visitors later gave a thumbs-up to the facilities, which had initially been described "filthy and uninhabitable" by some foreign delegates.

But the criticism evaporated once the athletes began to see the Village for themselves. There were odd instances of a few complaints but in general, the athletes declared that they were well well taken care of.

The cultural shows at the Village became a huge hit with the athletes and so did the 'International Zone' which even had a discotheque for the visitors.

The Games itself went off smoothly despite the negativity that preceded the event.

However, just hours after end of the Games, an unsavoury incident at the Village is hogging the limelight.

Reports say, some Australian athletes went berserk, damaging the electrical fittings and furniture in their residential tower, following Australia's Test series defeat against India.
