New Delhi: After a Noida businessman reported the loss of Rs 1.6 crore from his bank account, police have cracked a ring of criminal hackers who exploited several common loopholes in the internet banking system.
The Uttar Pradesh police have arrested five hackers who allegedly siphoned off Rs 1 crore 66 lakh from the account of a Noida based exporter.
"They hacked into different accounts the victim was using the provided by the net banking services of Punjab National Bank," says SSP RK Chaturvedi.
Officials say, that this bank unlike others does not send any intimation to the account holder when money is transferred from one account to another.
They either used the money that was temporarily transferred to their account or were a part of a the hacking process.
A team of the Noida police is in Mumbai looking for the mastermind and the others who could have been involved in the crime.
This cyber fraud once again proves one point and that is internet banking has several loopholes that can be easily be exploited and users need to be extremely cautios while making online transactions.
Banks have been advising netbank users to take some some necessary precautions like:
- Change your password every week
- Making the password alpha-numeric
- Avoid using names of family members as passwords
- And keeping the firewalls of the system updated
"These hackers also send you sometimes send you deceptive e-mails which will look like they're coming from a bank. It'll ask you to click on some link which will take you to some website which is not your bank's website ask you to give your details and the moment you give your details, you're in trouble," explains cyber crime lawyer, Pawan Duggal.
Experts also say that accessing your account from a cyber cafe could be the biggest mistake you could make as the information gets saved in some form in the system making it very easy for a hacker to use your account at his will.
