Cyclone alert sounded in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: All fishing and shipping activities have been suspended in Gujarat ports, including Kandla and Mundra, following a cyclone alert sounded by the authorities across the coastal districts of Saurashtra and

Kutch regions, official sources said here on Saturday.

"We have sounded an alert in Kutch as this region along with some districts of Saurashtra is expected to fall in the path of cyclone, which is now about 280 kilometre south-west of Porbandar," said District Collector of Kutch, Sanjay Dwivedi.

"Nine number signal, indicating 'great danger', has been sounded for the ports (Kandla and Mundra) located in Gulf of Kutch and others on the coastal areas," he added.

“The cyclone is expected to hit the Gujarat coast between Porbandar (in Saurashtra region) and Naliya (in Kutch). We have asked the port authorities to suspend all loading and un-loading activities in all the ports in region till a de-alert is sounded," Dwivedi said.

The port authorities have also been asked to shift all workers to safer places.

The Collector said that the administration has also warned fishermen not to venture into the sea.

"We have also alerted people of the district and those living in low-lying areas of Kutch district to shift to safer places," Dwivedi said.
