Mumbai: For the first time in their 115-year history, Mumbai’s much-famed dabbawalas in Mumbai are demanding a Diwali bonus from their customers.
And considering their modest salary – each tiffin-carrier earns about Rs 4,000 a month - their clientele is more than happy to oblige.
Twenty-five-year-old Natharam is one such dabbawala who’s unable to manage Diwali gifts for his family and is he looking forward to his customers for the Diwali Bonus.
“We have to distribute sweets and invite guests, so we demand bonus from our customers,” he says.
Mumbai has nearly 5,000 dabbawalas who feed a population of nearly 1.5 lakh everyday. Their clientele spans all
Even the big corporations applaud their work and feel that they deserve the bonus for their hard work.
“We and our association request all our customers to give a Diwali Bonus so that they can celebrate the festival as well,” says President, Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box Trust, Raghunath Megde.
The dabbawalas are demanding Rs 30 from each customer as a bonus this year, to which their obliging clientele has willingly agreed to.
“If we can give a bonus to the postman and the sweepers, then why not to them?” says local resident Rajendra Gasmal.
